Setting up Site Search in Search Console

Tracking onsite Searches with Google Analytics

We are going to set up analytics to allow us to track the way people use the on-site searching. This is going to let us know how people are using our site while they are on our site. This should help guide us in our future focuses with our clients as we move through their campaign.


  1. Log into the SEO@ account on Chrome and go to Google Analytics (GA).
  2. Find your client and log into their dashboard.
    • In the upper right-hand corner type the name of your client
    • Then click on your client's name in the main panel of the dashboard.
  3. After you are on your client’s dashboard look to the lower left-hand corner and click the gear icon.

  4. Under View, go to view settings

  5. While in the settings scroll all the way to the bottom where it says ‘Site Search Settings’ and turn them on
  6. For the Query Parameter put in ‘sq’ and click the checkbox that says ‘Strip query parameters out of URL’
  7. Then click save

  8. Now when you go into your client's dashboard. Under the setting for behavior, you can click into Site Search and see what Searches have been performed on your site.
    • This will take 24 hours to update
